Pick a real, small job for your assistant: a study tool for one class, a helper for a hobby, a tool for a group you're in. Write a short 'why this matters' paragraph. Small wins: a tool that does one thing well beats a do-everything one.

Write its instructions, then throw 10 questions at it
Write the standing instructions that make the AI do the job, then throw 10 real questions at it, including the weird and awkward ones. Wherever it answers badly, rewrite the instructions and go again. (Your first go failing half the questions is normal, not failure.)

Get it to 10 people, and write down what happens
Put your assistant in front of at least 10 real people who'd actually use it. Then watch the surprising ways they use it, or break it, and make one improvement from what you see.
